The Parent Race: Teaching Our Children - Day 5
Lord, help me be a light for you in my life today, Amen
Read: Matthew 6:22-23 (NIV)
““The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!”
Recently, having coffee with a friend, he made this comment to me, “I am thankful that God has trusted me with this season of life.” Looking at his life from the outside I couldn’t see how anyone could be thankful for all that he has on his plate. His story is very familiar to many grandparents I know because he and his wife have a daughter who has gone off the deep end with a moral failure. The environment she was providing was both unhealthy and dangerous for her preschooler. The courts have taken the child from her and given this friend and his wife custody.
My friend considers this a positive time because he is seeing the child blossom in their home. They have him in church every Sunday, read Bible stories to him every night, and pray with him at meals and other times. This friend was ecstatic the other day because they let the little boy decide who was going to say the prayer at the meal. He chose himself and started the prayer with the standard child’s prayer and then added thoughts of his own to the prayer, “God, please help mommy to get well.” The light of Christ is beginning to shine through their grandson and my friend and his wife are very thankful they have the chance to let the light of Christ shine through them to him.
Not all of you will have the second chance to be a parent but you do have the opportunity to let the light of Christ shine through to your children and/or grandchildren. What can you do to make the light shine even brighter?
God, help me to let your light shine through to the world around me, particularly to my children and/or my grandchildren. In his name, amen.
